The Yazh

About

The Yazh is a 3000 year old harp-like Tamil instrument that is mentioned in Tamil literature and has become extinct over time. With strings made of gut, a curved ebony neck and a boat shaped resonator covered with goatskin, the Yazh is said to be associated with the mythological Yali and bears religious import as indicated by its appearance in Tamil temple sculpture.

The Indian Music Experience Museum Invites you for a lecture demonstration by Uru who specialise in revitalizing traditional Tamil Instruments and have redesigned 6 variations of the Yazh using literary references and sculptures. Tracing the relationship between sound and music and how it has evolved, the session will delve into the history and origins of two ancient Tamil instruments; the Yazh and the 1500 years old Kudamuzha. The lecture will be accompanied by a performance with the Yazh and Kudamuzha.
