Yuva in Culture
Community outreach initiatives have always been an important part of IME’s vision and core values. We strongly believe that the museum belongs to the people, and that the staff at IME are caretakers of the space. We therefore measure our success by the extent that the community feels that IME is as much theirs as it is ours.
Ever since we opened our doors, we have conducted community-led projects. We are committed to making IME a safe space where people can feel safe and welcome, right from young children to senior citizens to LGTBQ communities, from people with disabilities to children who have had adverse experiences or disadvantages. We constantly strive to make IME inclusive and accessible to all.
This year (2021-22), we are undertaking two unique initiatives to take this vision further, helping us reach out to a wider community, and create a greater impact with our work:
Both projects focus on expanding IME’s reach to more young people, both in terms of career preparedness and job opportunities, and providing younger children with greater access to music, and to the museum space itself.
Yuva in Culture
IME is proud to be partnering with British Council as part of their Our Shared Cultural Heritage (OSCH) project. This multilateral programme uses digital technologies to link heritage institutions, youth organisations and young people in the UK and South Asia, working with British Council’s India, Pakistan and Bangladesh teams.
The project will test and evaluate new models for heritage and youth organisations to engage young people and provide an important framework to explore other cultures and create a dialogue between communities. The project aims to improve young people’s intercultural understanding, create new engagement opportunities for young people and build social cohesion.
In keeping with OSCH’s focus on exploring shared cultures and histories of the UK and South Asia, IME aims to engage with young people from the age of 14 to 25years old through the Yuva in Culture initiative. This initiative comprises three programmes that focus on enhancing larger community involvement, developing space for creative expressions and sector-based knowledge sharing.
Youth Advisory Board – a group of 10-15 young people between ages of 14-18 years who will function as an advisory council, reviewing IME’s work and offering implementable suggestions in all areas, but specially focused in the areas of community outreach and public programming. This programme aims to develop the leadership and strategic thinking skills of the youth board, giving them an insight into the process and method of audience requirements. Their work will translate into implementable recommendations for IME, cultivating a youth and community centric approach for the museum going forwards.
Young Creators Safe Space – a network of 18–22-year-old artists (musicians, dancers, writers, poets or visual artists), to use the museum as a safe, non-judgemental space to express themselves through art, with an emphasis on responding to issues in society and the community around them. This programme aims to create a platform for them to share, collaborate, critique, and amplify their and their peers’ works, based out of IME”s unique museum space.

Future Museum Professionals’ Programme – will offer paid internships to graduate and post-graduate students to garner real-world experience of museum exhibit curation (online or offline exhibits). The team of interns will comprise musicians, content writers, researchers and designers (1 or 2 from each category). This programme aims to provide a path for young people into a growing career option in India – museum professionals. Through this programme, the students will gain a deeper understanding of various aspects of exhibition (curation, design and execution) along with teamwork and problem-solving skills.
