Summersault – Music from the Khasi Hills
Summersault – Music from the Khasi Hills
Summersalt is a folk-fusion band deeply rooted in the indigenous music of Meghalaya. Through their performance the band will offer an insight into hill cultures and indigenous identity. Summersalt will deliver songs of hope that inspire social confidence and transcend linguistic barriers, inviting the audience to sing along. The band will also be using home tools such as the traditional Khasi umbrellas, a practical innovation born from the wettest places on earth, Meghalaya. While their messages carry deep meaning, Summersalt ensures that their music is entertaining and engaging, weaving storytelling into their performances. Foot-tapping hill music promises to uplift the audience after a week of hard work, and attendees will have the opportunity to play indigenous instruments alongside the band.
Blending Khasi and English lyrics, their songs are marked by wit and humor. The band’s unique sound incorporates both standard and lesser-known indigenous instruments, reflecting the rich culture of the Khasi Community. Widely recognized in Meghalaya, Summersalt has become synonymous with preserving and celebrating the hill culture. Their music is a tribute to the life, history, struggles, joys, fears, hopes, and future of the people. In 2016, Summersalt collaborated with Bollywood luminaries like Javed Akhtar, Usha Uthup, Farhan Akhtar, Shankar Mahadevan, Loy Mendonsa, and Ehsaan Noorani for the musical drama “Rock On 2.” Their journey has also taken them to Europe, where they performed at renowned venues. Currently, the band is working on their second album, featuring seven new songs. Summersalt actively engages in government and corporate projects to champion the cause of preserving hill culture, whether through dance, music, food, or textiles.
