Kayaka: Ancient Progressive Poetry. Modern Progressive Music.

Kayaka

Ancient Progressive Poetry. Modern Progressive Music.

  • India, circa 1157
  • A shoemaker writes about the difficulty of changing society.
  • A weaver ruminates on the value of work.
  • A burglar rhymes about finding the true jewels in life.
  • A sex-worker writes searing lines against caste, dedicating them to her ‘shameless’ deity.

Since 2024, Bruce Lee Mani, front man of acclaimed Bangalore band Thermal And A Quarter (TAAQ), and MD Pallavi, one of the foremost exponents of Bhavageethe, Kannada Vachana and Hindustani Classical music have been collaborating to explore Kannada poetry written by common people dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries.

Their project, “Kayaka” seamlessly blends this ancient yet progressive poetry with modern progressive yet accessible music to create a musical experience that spans the ages.
