Dhrupad Dhvani

About

Dhrupad is one of the oldest vocal forms of classical music from the Indian Subcontinent. The name probably comes from Dhruvapada (Dhruva meaning ‘fixed’ or constant) mentioned in the Natyashastra to denote structured songs. The earliest documented mention of Dhrupad as a genre appears in the 16th century text Ain-i-Akbari by Abu Fazl. In its present day form, a Dhrupad recital has either a solo singer or a small group of singers singing in unison to the beat of a Pakhawaj and unfolds in two parts, Aalaap and Dhrupad.

Dhrupad Dhvani is a two-day celebration of Dhrupad, one of India’s most ancient and profound vocal traditions. Presented by the Indian Music Experience, this program invites audiences to immerse themselves in the meditative depth and spiritual richness of Dhrupad. Featuring concerts by two esteemed Dhrupad exponents— Padma Shri Pt. Dr. Ritwik Sanyal and Pelva Naik — Dhrupad Dhvani offers a rare opportunity to experience the unique, resonant vocal techniques that define this art form.
