6 – A Akash Ganga
About
Annapurna Devi was an unparalleled guru and one of the greatest exponents of the plucked string instrument, the Surbahar. Daughter and disciple of the celebrated Ustad Allauddin Khan who founded the Maihar-Senia gharana, her genius has become part of legend in the world of Hindustani classical music. In 1956, Annapurna Devi, withdrew from public performance—a decision shaped by the complex dynamics of her marriage to Ravi Shankar — and dedicated herself entirely to teaching and shaping some of India’s finest musicians in quiet anonymity.
Named after Annapurna Devi’s sea-facing Mumbai residence, the film 6-A Akash Ganga by Nirmal Chander Dandriyal, probes the question, ‘Can an artist exist without an audience?’ Her disciple, Nityanand Haldipur, cuts through the myths to offer a rare glimpse into the life and philosophy of his enigmatic guru.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director.
