Exploring Shringar Ras in Ghazal

In February, globally recognized as the month of love, IME brings to you Ras-Mein Ulfat, a concert that journeys through love in all its shades.

While love and music have always been intrinsically linked, in the Indian aesthetic tradition, the emotion finds its most profound expression in Shringar Rasa. The Ghazal, with its inherent intimacy and lyrical richness, is another form that gives voice to love. With Ras-Mein Ulfat, Harini Rao & Friends find the perfect vessel for love in all its shades.

Curated around three movements of Shringar, Agaaz (the beginning), Intezar (the longing) and Wisal (the union), the evening invites listeners to sit with love as feeling, memory and experience.

About the Artists:

Harini Rao
Harini Rao is a Hindustani Classical vocalist from Hyderabad with over 23 years of rigorous training and performance experience. She has presented her music in more than 500 concerts across India and abroad, earning appreciation for her depth, clarity, and emotive expression. Alongside her work as a classical performer, Harini is also a playback singer, actor, voice artist, and educator, seamlessly bridging traditional and contemporary artistic spaces. Over the past decade, her musical journey has been marked by numerous awards and recognitions, reflecting both her commitment to the art and her versatility as a performer.

Saikat Basu
Saikat Basu is a singer-songwriter, artist, poet, and composer, most prominently known as the bassist and vocalist of the Hyderabad-based indie jazz/blues band The Songsmiths. Besides rock, jazz, and funk, Saikat’s musical world is deeply rooted in the rich traditions of ghazal and semi-classical music. A devoted learner and ardent admirer of thumri, dadra, and ghazal, he draws inspiration from the timeless legacies of Begum Akhtar, Shobha Gurtu, Naina Devi, Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali and other great masters. Their influence resonates in his phrasing, emotional depth, and reverence for melody and word. For this performance, Saikat is playing acoustic guitar, offering a more intimate musical setting.

Upkar Godboley
Born and nurtured in Dewas, the culturally rich city consecrated by the presence of Pt. Kumar Gandharva, Shri Upkar Godboley’s musical journey began under the intimate guidance of his grandfather, the late Shri Yashwant Godboley. This familial foundation was soon strengthened by a devoted twelve-year apprenticeship under the late Dr. Vivek Bansod of Ujjain, a revered name in harmonium artistry and tuning. This intensive tutelage shaped the refined musicality for which Upkar is recognized today. His command of music has earned him a distinguished place on major national platforms.

Anirudh Sharma
Anirudh Sharma is a Bengaluru and Hyderabad-based Hindustani percussionist with extensive training and performance experience across tabla and pakhawaj traditions. He is a disciple of Sri Yashawant Pundu ji of Hyderabad and eminent tabla maestro Pt. Abhijit Banerjee of Kolkata, and currently pursues advanced training in pakhawaj under Shri Sukhad Munde ji. Anirudh performs extensively as an accompanist on tabla for both Hindustani and Carnatic musicians, and regularly accompanies Dhrupad and Haveli Sangeet on pakhawaj. His work also extends to the field of dance; he has composed and collaborated on music for Kathak, which is currently used by dancers across the world.
