Shahjahanpur Gharana of Sarod
About
The Indian Music Experience Museum invites you for a lecture demonstration on the Shahjahanpur Gharana of Sarod. This unique tradition developed across erstwhile Awadh, undivided Bengal, and Bihar, incorporates regional essence into its vast repertoire. Compositions echo marching tunes, the lyricism of thumri, staccato structure of a Rabab composition and the sombreness of Dhrupad. The Gharana also embraces compositions played on other allied stringed instruments like Veena, Sursingar, and Sitar, which were collected and passed on by the doyen of this gharana – Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra.
In this program Dr. Chandrima Majumdar, an exponent of the Sarod, will perform select compositions from the Shahjahanpur Gharana, delving into its history, fascinating facets and her personal journey. She will be accompanied on the tabla by Kartik Bhat.
